| Junghuhn, Franz Wilhelm German. Born in Mansfeld (Germany), 26 October 1809. He studied medicine and the natural science in Halle and Berlin (Germany). Due to a duel he was sentenced to 10 years Imprisonment in 1831. He escaped two years later and after having spent a year in the foreing legion in Africa, he came to Indonesia in 1835, where he became a medical officer in the Netherland Indies Army. Fortunately he could devote himself Fully to studying natural history and making excursions through Java, thanks to his superior A.E.Fritz. In 1839 he was transferred to Sumatra , where he made investigations in the Batak lands, resulting in his book ‘Die Battalander auf Sumatra’ (Berlin, 1847). In 1842 he became a member of the Natural Sciences Commission. His great work, ‘Java, zijne gedaante, Zijn plantentooi en inwendige bouw’ (Rotterdam-The Hague, 1848-1855) is illustrated with lithographs after his own drawings. Important scientist, author, draughtsman, philosopher and photographer, who can be considered one of the first to visualize the immense splendor of Indonesian nature. Died in Lembang, Java, 24 April 1864. |
